Essential Question: How did immigrants define becoming American?

Lesson Question: What was life like for immigrants that lived in tenement buildings?

Introduction

Examination at Ellis Island

Between 1863 and 1935, approximately 7,000 immigrants lived at 97 Orchard Street in the Lower East Side of New York City. Others moved to tenements in other cities throughout the country like Boston, MA. Between 8-10 people would share a tenement apartment which, by today's standards, would be considered quite small. What was life like for these immigrants?
