Students Calculate Torque at the Iron Works

Early American colonists learned to harness the power of water. Exactly how much power was unknown until Malden fifth graders learned about another powerful tool called estimation. Students visited the Saugus Iron Works during April and May where they used estimation to measure the dimensions of working 17th century waterwheels. Students recorded their measurements on worksheets in the field and upon returning to school calculated the torque values for several waterwheels.
Students also learned through Waterwheels! Part II, how "estimation is an engineers best friend!"

Note: Waterwheels 2 has had over 400 hits since its launch on April 25, 2006.
