Teaching American History with Digital Media Online Professional Development Course

Purpose: The Everett, Malden and Medford school districts, working with WGBH Educational Foundation and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will develop, review, revise and pilot the delivery of the Teaching American History with Digital Media online course. This course is designed to provide online professional development in American history to high school teachers.

About the project:
A Teaching American History with Digital Media course is being developed, revised, piloted, and taught in collaboration with the WGBH Educational Foundation, the partner high-need school districts of Everett, Malden and Medford, the Tri-City Technology Education Collaborative (TRITEC) and the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.  This course is presenting topics in high school U.S. history from the 17th through the beginning of the 21st century.

This online course is being aligned with the Massachusetts History and Social Science Frameworks, and incorporating the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies.  The revision of the course includes review of the content as it reflects the integration of 21st Century Skills and Social Studies.

Supporting this effort are three, district-based, experienced, mentor teacher leaders (i.e., Teacher Learning Center Directors) who assist in district-based recruitment and dissemination activities, and provide support to district teachers in their roles as content developers and course participants in their schools.  The Teacher Learning Center Directors also assist in placing course materials into the Moodle class management platform of MassONE, the Massachusetts online network for Education.

Five teachers from the TRITEC partner school districts are serving as teacher content developers/reviewers, with a special emphasis on including teachers who have participated in previous Teaching American History Grants. One teacher is serving as lead content developer/reviewer.  Five additional teachers are being recruited to serve as participants in the pilot online course, Teaching American History with Digital Media when it has been revised and is ready for delivery.
