Genetics: Inheritance of Disease

Lesson Plan

State Standards:

3. Genetics
Central Concepts: Genes allow for the storage and transmission of genetic information. They are a set of instructions encoded in the nucleotide sequence of each organism. Genes code for the specific sequences of amino acids that comprise the proteins characteristic to that organism.
3.4 Distinguish among observed inheritance patterns caused by several types of genetic traits (dominant, recessive, codominant, sex-linked, polygenic, incomplete dominance, multiple alleles)

Essential Question:

How do genetics contribute to the likelihood of an individual acquiring a disease from either or both of their parents?

Lesson Question:

How is the inheritance of physical traits related to the inheritance of diseases ?

Introduction:

You have been hired by a medical research company that has been contracted by a doctor's office to gather information for their patients and their families about a specific inherited disease. The doctor's office would like the information to be presented in a simple fashion that may be easily understood by the patient and their family.

Task:

The doctor's office has asked the medical research company by which you are employed to design an informational brochure, Prezi or PowerPoint that is available to patients and families in their waiting room.

Lesson Experiences:

The doctor's office has requested the following inherited diseases to be researched in order to present the information to their patients and their families.

Choose one of the diseases listed and research for the following information on the Internet.

General description of the disorder.

What are the possible causes and/or inheritance patterns of the disorder.

How is the disorder diagnosed? germ cells

Incidence rates of the disorder.

Treatments.

Listing of websites or groups created to assist individuals with the disorder or friends/family of an individual with the disorder.

Listing of the all resources used for the project, you must use at least three different sources. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA as a source.

Suggested websites or you may use your own.

Once you completed your research, decide what would be the most important information to present. How would you answer this question: “ How is the inheritance of physical traits related to the inheritance of diseases ?”

waiting roomThen design an informational brochure, Prezi or PowerPoint that is available to patients and families in their waiting room.

The doctor's office would like the information to be presented in a simple fashion that may be easily understood by the patient and their family.

Then present your brochure to the class. If they were the patients in the waiting room, would they be informed and reassured by your presentation?

Conclusion:

As a medical researcher completing this project you have prepared valuable information concerning inherited diseases for patients and their family/friends. Has doing this project changed your thinking about research being done to use Stem Cells to treat diseases?
