Lesson 1 - Introduction to Insulators and Conductors

Lesson Plan

State Standards:

Physical Sciences: Electrical Energy

6. Recognize that electricity in circuits requires a complete loop through which an electrical current can pass, and that electricity can produce light, heat and sound.

7. Identify and classify objects and materials that conduct electricity and objects and materials that are insulators of electricity.

Essential Question:

Lesson Question:

circuits

Introduction:

In this unit, we will be studying circuits and electricity. We will review what we have learned about series and parallel circuits. Then we will move on to explore materials that affect electricity.

Task:

You will build series and parallel circuits. Once you have successfully completed this task, begin to investigate what materials help electricity to flow and what materials prevent it from flowing.

Conclusion:

Now that we have examined lightbulbs in circuits, what have we learned about insulators and conductors?

Here are the main ideas to remember:

  1. A circuit must be closed for electricity to flow through.
  2. An insulator will prevent electricity from flowing through the circuit.
  3. A conductor will allow electricity to flow through the circuit.
