The Voices Rising Project is funded through the U.S. Department of Education through its Teaching American History grant program. The school districts of Malden, Everett, Medford and Revere, in collaboration with the Tri-City Technology Education Collaborative (TRITEC), have been awarded $1 million for the development of training programs for teachers to enhance their skills in the teaching of American history.

The Voices Rising Project is a three-year initiative that will train teachers in grades 3, 5, and 8 in these four public school systems to think and act like historians by using and analyzing primary source documents in their teaching of history. Partnering with the schools in this project are Suffolk University, University of Massachusetts at Lowell through the Tsongas Industrial History Center, the Boston National Historical Park, the Boston Public Library, Old North Church, Minuteman National Historical Park, Lowell National Historical Park, Saugus Iron Works Historical Site and the Boston African American National Historical Site.

Over the three-year span of the Voices Rising Project, 72 teachers from the four districts will each receive 81 hours of intensive professional development in American history content and skills. The project will directly impact more than 2000 students in the classrooms of these participating teachers.

The university partners, Suffolk University, and UMass Lowell will share the responsibility of providing summer institutes and seminars to the teachers, while the six Boston-area national parks and historic sites will offer a hands-on component to the classroom professional development. The Boston Public Library will provide research services to the participating teachers.
